The original Boat was built partly as an inspection vehicle and partly as a private carriage for the Spooner family on the Ffestiniog Railway. Its date of construction is unknown but almost certainly pre-dates the operation of steam loco’s in 1863.
The boat came to an untimely end when Charles Spooner disobeyed the rules and crashed into an up train in February 1886.
No drawings or photographs exist of this original boat wagon, only an engraving and some rather vague descriptions. Over the years many people have argued the exact design properties of the original Boat Wagon, with some coming to the conclusion that some details on the original engraving must be incorrect.
Over 100 years later, the FR built a replica Boat Wagon.
Our Model
We have attempted to make a realistic model within the assumed proportions of the original boat. The only limitations have been production costs (there would be no point in making a highly detailed model that no one could afford to buy).
It’s a very sturdy body, built from 3mm plywood and cast resin parts. The mast is removable, simply slotting in place.
Although the model is available finished and painted, the kit is easy to assemble. You don’t need a fully kitted workshop – just a kitchen table for a few hours (no cutting or sanding needed).
Now available in 45mm Gauge
With a wider body, the model is now available in 45mm gauge. Click on the photos and see what you think.
